Robert John Mentzer

Robert “Herbie” John Mentzer, 84, of Quarryville, PA, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late John and Mary Mentzer (Snyder). Herbie honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 and went into the Army Reserves until 1966. Herbie met the love of his life, Darlene at Rocky Springs Roller Skating Rink in 1955 and married in 1960. Herbie was actively involved with the Manheim Masonic Lodge 587. He was a Past Master in 1994 at the Manheim Masonic Lodge. Herbie was a lifetime member of The American Legion in Lancaster, VFW in Lancaster, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He was self-employed for over 30 years, working at Ken’s American Gas Station on East King Street in Lancaster. Herbie also worked at DART Container in Leola and the Manheim Auto Auction. During his free time, Herbie enjoyed camping, playing cards, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a professional roller skater and speed skater instructor. Herbie is survived by his wife, Darlene Mentzer; his daughter, Cindy Venerick (Paul) of Quarryville, his grandson, Dustin Venerick (Christina) of Willow Street, his granddaughter, Brittany Venerick (Logan) of Quarryville; his great-grandson Brayden Venerick and his great-granddaughter Sadie Venerick of Willow Street; his brother, Richard Mentzer of Strasburg; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Daniel Mentzer and his sister Harriet Shaeffer. Relatives and friends are invited to Herbie’s Celebration of Life at The Groffs Family Funeral Home, 528 W. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a viewing from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow the ceremony at Riverview Burial Park, 1100 S. Duke St., Lancaster, PA 17603. The family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff at Hospice & Community Care.
