Richard A. McCurdy D.D.S.

Richard A. (Dick) McCurdy, 94, passed away peacefully December 26, 2018. He was able to visit with his five children and their spouses and take calls and receive messages from many of his 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and share memories and smiles with them. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Jean McNulty McCurdy. They were inseparable, and were kind and loving parents, partners, and role models. A proud Brooklyn boy and graduate of Loyola University ( New Orleans, LA) (where he loaded freight cars in the rail-yards during college) before heading off to the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. Dick served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy Reserves at the end of the Korean conflict, treating stateside Navy personnel. He began his dental practice in Manhattan and Brooklyn before moving to Wantagh, LI to raise the family. He coached Little League, joined the parish council of St. Frances de Chantel and held numerous other leadership positions including president of the Nassau County Dental Society and the Brooklyn Catholic Dental Guild. Jean and Dick also paid it forward. In the 1960s and 70s, they donated their time and talents to the Maryknoll Missions to provide dental care to citizens in developing countries in Central America and the Caribbean, sometimes delivering life saving medical and dental supplies by crossing treacherous terrain on burros to the remote villages of their patients Dick and Jean treasured spending time on their classic 1936 cruiser, Much Ado. They were longtime members of Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club where he held numerous leadership roles, including Commodore. They enjoyed a long and well deserved retirement in the Isle of Palms, SC and Willow Valley Community in Lancaster, PA where they were blessed with many generous and caring friends, staff members and hospice caregivers. Dick‘s mission in life was to bring caring, happiness and good humor to all he encountered, which he did in generous and self-effacing manner throughout his life. He loved music and dancing with his family members and friends at any and every occasion.
