Reed Stuart Spiegel

Reed Stuart Spiegel, 84 of Lancaster, PA passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018. Born in Waterloo, Iowa he was the son of the late Edward and Mildred Spiegel. By the grace of God, Reed was blessed throughout his life with a loving wife and family, good health and the means to contribute meaningfully to his community. He lived a life filled with purpose, joy and contentment borne largely from his faith in God. He is survived by Marlys Wherry Spiegel, his loving wife of 62 years, his daughter Terri, wife of J Paul Sirman of Spring, TX; son Reed, Jr., husband of Elizabeth of Berwyn, PA; daughter, Shelley, wife of Jeffrey Smallwood of Wayne, PA; and daughter, Amy, wife of Joel Wolverton of Roswell, GA. Also surviving are grandchildren: Jonathan, husband of Robyn, and Ryan Sirman; Reed Stuart lll and Caroline Spiegel; Michael and John Smallwood; Todd, Jacob, and Maxwell Wolverton and Reed's sister, Nanette Joens of Cedar Rapids, IA. Reed's brother Kent preceded him in death as did newborn granddaughter, Margaret Spiegel. Reed earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Administration from Iowa State University. Shortly after graduation, Reed married Marlys and started his career with Armstrong World Industries while continuing his education at night school and earning an MBA in accounting from Ball State University. Reed also earned a CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certificate. His entire business career was spent working in finance and accounting at Armstrong World Industries. Over 35 years he held various roles including Operations Controller at several Armstrong plant locations, Controller of Carpet Operations, Vice-President and Controller of Operations for Armstrong subsidiary, Evans-Black Carpets, Controller of International Operations and then retiring as Assistant Corporate Controller. He also served as President of the Lancaster Chapter of the National Association of Accountants (NAA). Before and after retirement he was involved in community and philanthropic endeavors. He was elected President of the Manheim Township School Board. He also served as Treasurer and board member of the Lancaster Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse; President of the Lancaster Family and Children Services board; member of the Lancaster County Library System board; and member of the Lancaster chapter of SCORE (Counselors for Small Business Administration). In addition to his volunteer work in the community, Reed was a devoted and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster. He carried out God's calling to serve as a member of the Lutheran faith in his church and in Christian service throughout Lancaster. He served multiple terms as a member of the Vestry at Trinity Lutheran Church and was elected Trustee for 2 terms. He was chair of the Evangelism Committee, the Chancel Task Force, and the Mission Statement Committee. He also spent 9 years on the Stewardship Committee for the Lower Susquehanna Synod of the Lutheran Church. Apart from work and service to the community, Reed was a loving husband and father to his family. He relished family get togethers which grew in size and scope as the family expanded. He enjoyed traveling and appreciated time spent with his wife and close friends. He was an avid reader and sports enthusiast. A celebration of Reed's life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 South Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Timothy A. Mentzer officiating. The family will receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Reed's name to Trinity Lutheran Church.
