Michael A. Heberlein

Michael A. Heberlein of Lancaster passed away in his home on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. He was 63. Michael was born in Hanover on July 14, 1949. He was the son of the late Herbert L. and Madeline B. Heberlein of Bausman, Pennsylvania. He attended Penn Manor High School, and went on to graduate from Millersville University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in painting. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 37 years, their two sons: Nikolaus Heberlein of Richmond, Virginia, and William Heberlein of Lancaster, as well as his daughter, Katherine, wife of Brandon Henry, of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his brother Thomas Heberlein, husband of Joyce E., of Lancaster; his sister Mary Sahd, wife of Michael, of Lancaster; his brother James Heberlein, husband of Mary Ann, of Willow Street; and his sister Anne Heberlein, wife of Brian Adams, of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Heberlein, husband of Diane, of Lancaster, and his brother Robert Heberlein, husband of Jean Marie, of Lancaster. Many nieces and nephews called him “Uncle Mike.” Michael was a well-known artist who was very active in Lancaster’s art community. His paintings have appeared in numerous venues throughout the region. In 1984, he founded Lancaster Galleries, which he operated with his wife, Joyce, and which specializes in fine art, framing, and restoration services. He also founded the art appraisal business Art Services and was a certified art appraiser. He was a member of the Appraisers Association of America, the Professional Picture Framers Association, and the Society of Gilders. He served on the board of directors for both the Charles Demuth Museum Foundation and the David Brumbach Trust, and was actively involved in Destination Downtown, now known as Lancaster Arts. A gathering in honor of his life and accomplishments will be held on Monday, June 24th 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Groffs Family Funeral Services, 528 West Orange Street (corner of W. Orange and Pine Sts.) Lancaster, PA.
