Jean Elizabeth Slover

Jean Elizabeth Slover, 94, of The Glen at Willow Valley Communities, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 17, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Horace H. and Marie E. (Herr) Wenger. She shared 40 wonderful years with her husband, the late Lloyd F. (Pete) Slover. Born in Paradise, PA, she graduated from McCaskey High School in the mid-year class of 1940 where she was a member of the national Honor Society, stage band, orchestra, and Quill and Scroll. She was employed in the offices of the originally titled Armstrong Cork Company and later by the Lancaster Recreation Commission serving with the Happy Hours, a Senior Citizen Club. Jean was a lifelong member of Otterbein United Methodist Church where she was involved in teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and with community outreach. As one of the original residents of the Willow Valley Communities at The Manor, Jean lived there for over 30 years, enjoying the hospitality and care of three of the communities as well as serving on several of the resident-based committees. Always a friend, and willing to help all, she found a place in the hearts of so many residents and staff. Jean was talented in sewing, knitting, crocheting, puzzles, and drawing. She was an accomplished player of the mandolin and violin and enjoyed piano as well. At age 92, she decided to teach herself the Balaliaka. Reading was a great joy that lasted into her final moments while benefiting from the technology of the Kindle large print. She always enjoyed learning and into her 90’s, pursued elements of the world of technology. Jean was a dog owner/lover who later enjoyed visits by a special K9 family member, happily sharing those therapeutic visits with fellow residents. She was very involved with her family, lending any kind of support and acting as a humble role model. Jean is survived by her daughter, Jean M. Slover, granddaughter, Wendy Ogen, wife of Marshall Ogen (who is a dear grandson to her); and great grandsons, Payton and Preston, all of New Jersey. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jean’s Funeral Service from The Groff Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange St., (corner of W. Orange and Pine Streets), Lancaster, PA on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with The Rev. Jonette Gay officiating. Interment at St. John’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, Paradise, PA. The family will receive friends at The Groff Family Funeral Home on Friday from 12:00 Noon until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603 or to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603 in Jean’s honor and memory.
