George H. Smith

George H. Smith, 92, of Hershey Ave., Lancaster, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, at Hospice and Community Care on Friday, August 19, 2016. He was the husband of the late Betty J. Gardner Smith who passed away in 2002 and the son of the late David and Ida Weidman Smith. George retired from Kunzler’s in 1985 after 35 years of service. He worked in the meat packing department and served as a delivery person. Prior to that he worked for the former Hamilton Watch Company. He proudly served his country with the United States Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He was injured during the war in France and arrived in Normandy the day after the attack. His passions in life included fishing at Safe Harbor and the Indian River in Delaware, and bowling at Rocky Springs and Leisure Lanes. He also enjoyed going to the beach, raising pigeons in his early days, taking in stray dogs, hunting, golfing, casino’s in Maryland, tropical fish, CB Radio’s, making bucktails, working on cars, country music, and will be remembered for telling jokes, even in his final days at Hospice. He is lovingly survived by his children, Larry G., husband of Jean M. Smith, Daniel E. Smith, and Joyce L., wife of Michael W. Miller, all of Lancaster, PA, a brother, William Smith, four grandchildren, Douglas L., husband of Adrienne Smith, Kelly J., wife of Edward J. Leone, Ryan M., husband of Kristin Miler, and Jason M., husband of Ashlee Miller. He also has seven great grandchildren and was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Relatives and friends are respectfully to attend George’s Funeral Service from The Groff Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. with The Rev. Keith Braucher officiating. Interment will take place at Riverview Burial Park. Military Honors will be provided by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 9:00 A.M. until time of service.
