D. Jeanne Jennings Jones

D. Jeanne Jennings Jones, 88, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital with her children by her side. She and Joseph L. Jones, Jr. were married for sixty-six years. Jeanne Jones was born in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of the late Kelse Eugene Jennings and Dorothy Augusta Wilson Jennings. She studied journalism and art at the University of Texas and graduated from the School of Commercial Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. She met her husband Joseph L. Jones, who was working for Armstrong in Boston at the time and they were married in August 1950. The couple soon moved to Pennsylvania and started their family. An interest in history was heightened by her travels with her husband. She wrote her first book, entitled Jennings' Daring Voyage published in 1995 to document her family history in Denmark, England and America. She was proud of her family members who suffered hardships and lost their lives so that we might prosper and live life more abundantly in a free country. Jeanne was an active participant in the Junior League of Lancaster and a participating member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a Lancaster General Hospital Auxiliary member. She and her husband were charter members of Highland Presbyterian Church. Throughout the years, Jeanne continued her art, and studied portrait painting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She also enjoyed playing golf with her dear friends in both Naples, Florida and Lancaster. She was a member of the Lancaster Country Club and the family enjoyed spending time together in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Jeanne is survived by her three children; Joseph L. Jones III married to Nancy Altdoerffer Jones, their two children Joseph L. Jones IV, married to Jeanna, and Andrew Jones and his wife Jen and their daughter Darcy; Daughter Kate Jones Mercer and her two daughters, Dr. Lauren Zinchuk her husband Dr. Andrey Zinchuk and their children Lida and Yuri; Alyson Merrill and her husband Brett Merrill and their children Harper and Phoebe; and Carolyn Jones Borris and her husband Jacques Borris and their daughters Zoe and Mercer. Jeanne is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jackie Jennings, and her neice and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two brothers: Howard and James Robert Jennings. A Memorial Gathering will be held at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange Street (corner of Orange & Pine Sts.) Lancaster, PA on Sunday, August 21, 2016 from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. A private family interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery.
