Robert J. Beck, Sr.

Robert J. Beck, Sr., (Bob), 87, Passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018, at Hospice & Community Care. Born in Lancaster, Bob was the son of the late Charles and Alice Beck and the husband of Ethel (Guise) Beck, with whom he celebrated 66 years of marriage on June 21st. Bob lived most of his life in Lancaster until 12 years ago when he and Ethel downsized and moved to Leola. After graduation from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1948, Bob served in the United States Air Force. He then went to Barber School in Philadelphia and for over 25 years ran his own barbershop, Beck’s barbershop, on Nevin Street in Lancaster. Bob also worked at the former Raub Supply Company and later in life worked at the former Longenecker Drug Store and CVS. Surviving are his three children, son, Robert Beck, Jr., husband of Barbara, daughter, Ann Burklew, wife of Jeffrey, and daughter, Phyllis Miller, wife of Larry. Bob, who was affectionately known as Bob-Bob, will be greatly missed by his 6 grandchildren, Richard Beck, Kimberly Ferry, Lisa Barshinger, Nicole Palmer, John Burklew, and Michael Miller and his 7 great-grandchildren, Jayden Barshinger, Carter Barshinger, Olivia Palmer, Cosmos Ferry, Ryan Miller, Riley Palmer and Alice Miller. Bob was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters: Richard Zwally, Fred Waltman, Mary Fry, Helen Russell and Ruth Metzler. The most important things in Bob’s life was his family. He especially enjoyed spending the holidays with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most vacations were spent with his family at the beach at Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. Every time any member of his family left from visiting, Bob always told them to call him when they got home so he knew they arrived safely. Bob’s favorite past times included bowling, playing pinochle, and bicycle riding. After retiring he enjoyed painting and other art projects. Bob was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 North Mulberry Street, Lancaster, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bob’s Celebration of Life Funeral Service at Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 N. Mulberry Street, Lancaster, on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery, Millersville, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s name may be made to the Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Bank located at 812 North Queen Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.
