Philip Grosvenor Benoit

Philip “Phil” Grosvenor Benoit, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 80. Born in Syracuse, NY, the son of the late Paul Benoit and Doris Pond Benoit, Philip leaves a legacy of personal character, a love of family, and a gift for communicating the wonder of the human experience. His love of country led him to join the United States Army, where he proudly and honorably served as a Captain in Vietnam. His instinct for sharing his experiences with others fueled his interest in writing, storytelling, and broadcasting. In a few short years following his Army service, Phil’s work ethic and writing abilities led him to become a university professor, published author, and accomplished broadcaster. One of Phil’s defining characteristics was his intellectual curiosity. He always followed it. Early in his career, Phil transitioned to work in public relations at colleges and universities. Soon he achieved a leadership position at Middlebury College, and his articles were being published in the likes of the New York Times and other national publications. Phil remains an example that putting your talents into action has its own intrinsic reward, and good things inevitably spring from the effort. He was a renaissance man... well-read, quick-witted, a compelling writer, orator, professor, marathon runner, podcaster, blogger, outdoorsman, carpenter, among his many talents. He leaves this world with much accomplished and little undone. His professional accomplishments pale in comparison to the impact he made on family and friends. For those who knew him well, Phil was patient, gentle, wise, and young-at-heart. A doting grandfather who celebrated every milestone, he was a tender husband always by Candace’s side, a faithful brother who relished pilgrimages back to New York to share time with his family in the Adirondacks, and a father with a moral compass. He was the consummate family man, friend, neighbor, citizen, and Army veteran. Phil was the epitome of an exemplary American. He shall be missed. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Candace Blohm Benoit; daughters Kimberly Brite (Tony) and Marie Dillon (Paul); and his adored grandchildren, Ion and Karina (Kimberly), and Alice and Mae (Marie). Phil is also survived by his brother Doug Benoit; and sisters Judy Cole (Frank) and Sue Benoit Miller. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 204, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St, Lancaster, PA 17603. Friends are invited to greet the family at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will immediately follow at St. James in the Memorial Garden.
