Nancy S. Paden

Nancy Shreve Paden passed away quietly with family by her side at the Lancaster General Hospital Tuesday morning, the eighth of January. Born in Lancaster on the 7th of May 1918, she was the widow of Ralph Snyder Paden of Carlisle. She was the daughter of the late James Downs and Anna Katherine Grube Shreve and the eldest of five children, James Jr., Elizabeth, Katherine & Joanne. Nancy is survived by her sister Joanne Shreve Kuster of Dalton, GA; two sons, Lynn Scott Paden of Washington, DC, Todd Bryan Paden of New Orleans; a daughter in law, Gemma de la Fuente of Washington, DC and a grandson, Felix Ian Paden of Lancaster. Nancy graduated from the Stevens High School for Girls in 1936 and the Millersville State Teacher’s College in 1940, where she met her future husband Ralph. In the mid 1950’s she opened and operated Art Craft House which was the first store in Lancaster to sell the work of modern designers Russell Wright and Francisco Rebajes. In the late 1960’s Nancy received a Masters degree in counseling from Millersville University. Her teaching career spanned forty years; it began in a one room school house and finished as a guidance counselor for the Donegal School District. Nancy also worked for a number of years at WGAL TV filling in for numerous regulars such as Mary Jane Landis. Nancy loved sports and was an accomplished tennis player. In 2006 she was inducted into the Lancaster County Tennis Hall of Fame for her two Lancaster City County singles championships. In the 1960’s Nancy took up golf and was an active member of the Media Heights Golf Club serving as president of the ladies golf club. Later in life her competitive nature turned to bridge, which she played weekly at Homestead Village. From 1983 to 2003 Nancy and Ralph left Lancaster and lived in Naples, Florida. There she started a new career as a real estate agent for the firm of Ad Miller. Nancy never completely put aside her desire to teach. In Florida she tutored disadvantaged youth and taught English as a second language. Nancy was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, a Daughter of the American Revolution and a staunch republican. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held in Village Commons, Homestead Village on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 10:00AM. Her ashes will be interred this spring and an announcement will be made of Nancy’s Life Celebration Memorial Service to be held at First United Methodist Church, Lancaster.
