Margaret Campbell Woodbridge

Margaret C. Woodbridge passed away on March 13, 2011 at Homestead Village with family by her side. Formerly of Millersville, she was the daughter of the late John and Esta McDowell Campbell. She was a much loved mother, grandmother, aunt, and teacher of thousands, both young and old. Margaret graduated with the Class of 1937 from Bucknell University, earned her Masters Degree, and worked toward her Doctorate at the University of Delaware. She spent her first years of teaching at Penn State, Hazelton and Maytown High School where she taught English, French and Latin and was an Associate Professor of English at Millersville University retiring in 1985. Peg is best remembered for her many years of teaching English at Millersville University, where she specialized in Chaucer and women writers. Always known for her musical accomplishments as well, she was a frequent accompanist at musicals and churches. During the war she served her country as a WAVE. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lancaster. Margaret belonged to various Professional and Local organizations including The League of Women Voters, Association of Retired Professors, AAUP and AAUW. After her retirement from Millersville she remained in demand as a speaker at Quest, Art Club and the Clio Society. A collection of important books, known as the Margaret C. Woodbridge Collection, is dedicated to her at the Millersville University Library. She had a lifelong love of music, literature and the theater. She wrote on a wide variety of subjects, including items of historical local interest. Her love of culture led her to travel throughout the world, including Russia, Alaska, Hawaii, Eastern Europe, and England. For years she enjoyed attending the theater festivals at Niagara and Stratford. She served as a docent at Wheatland. Her commitment to liberal causes will always be remembered and honored by her family. She will be missed by her son Robert (Kathy) Woodbridge, daughter Barbara (David) Lieberman, beloved grandchildren Ben, Danny, Amy and John, niece Margaret Henderson, and step grandson Matt. She was preceded in death by her sister Jean, her former husband Byron, and her companion Homer May. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Margaret’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut Street, Lancaster at 11:00 a.m. Friday March 18, 2011 with Rev. John W. Morris officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of Service. Friends are invited to join the family at a luncheon immediately following the Service in the Parish hall. Private Interment will be held in the Marietta Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
