Kenneth Joseph Almy

Kenneth Joseph Almy, 96, of Lancaster, PA, formerly of Chestnut Hill, PA and earlier Mendham, Whippany, and Lincroft, NJ, died at the Hamilton Arms on Thursday, March 23, 2017. Born in San Francisco, CA, he was the son of the late George J. and Ruth Gertrude Cornyn Klein, and raised by Ruth and John H. Almy. He leaves behind his wife of 71 years, Marjorie Turner Almy. Kenneth graduated from Iona Prep School, New Rochelle, NY and Moravian College in Bethlehem in 1943. He joined the United States Navy and served during World War II, participating in the Normandy D-Day amphibious assault on Omaha Beach. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Summit, NJ and New York City, NY as a second-generation employee along with his brother. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Past President of Rotary Club, Summit, NJ, and member of the Lancaster Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. He enjoyed golf, fishing, cooking, furniture caning/rushing, and writing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John Hale Almy II husband of Marcy Zwerling, Colorado Springs, CO, two daughters; Deborah Ann Almy, wife of James Ranson, New London, NH, Lucinda Turner Almy wife of Michael Hamilton, Bow, WA, daughter-in-law, Anne Kryder Almy-Webber, Lancaster, PA ten grandchildren: Jennifer, Denison, Cornyn, Mark, Ruth and Clara Almy, Elizabeth and James Ransom, Joshua and Hannah Clingenpeel and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth James Almy and a brother, George James Almy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Delp Road, Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Dan Powell and the Rev. David W. Peck officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Kenneth’s name may be made to Moravian College, Office of Institutional Advancement, Moravian College, 1200 Main Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018-9980.
