Josephine M. Burnside

Josephine M. Burnside left this earthly life to meet the Lord on May 25, 2015, at Manor Care of Lancaster. She was born in York, PA and was a graduate of York Catholic High School. On October 26, 1944, she married Charles O. Burnside. They went on to have their three children, Charles F. Burnside, Connie M. Glusco and Frank O. Burnside. Josephine, also known as “Sugar”, is survived by her grandchildren: Connor Burnside, Joanne Smith, Charles Sharp, Chris Sharp, Chris Burnside, Damian Burnside and Nat Burnside. Also surviving are 13 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and her sisters: Antonia Delia, Antonette Kessler, Virginia Ward and Angie Hinds. She was predeceased by her sister, Jenny Sheridan. Josephine and Charlie founded Maple Donuts on Maple Street, York, PA, in 1946. Working as a team, day and night, they grew the business over the years. They moved to Lancaster in 1973 and founded Burnside Donuts at 2300 Columbia Avenue. Patrons always welcomed and enjoyed Josephine’s smile. In her heart, even after her retirement, she would often talk about going back to work. Josephine was a proud, first generation Sicilian and a devout Catholic. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Lancaster, PA and she led the Wednesday evening Rosary Group at Manor Care. In York, she was involved in politics and served as a Committee Woman for 18 years. After moving to Lancaster, she became involved with Altrusa International and was a past member of Conestoga Country Club. Sugar thoroughly enjoyed all of her Atlantic City “vacations” and you couldn’t keep her from Manor Care bingo! Those closest to her, knew that the color purple and purple flowers were always her favorite. The family extends their grateful thank you to the Manor Care staff who loved and cared for Sugar over the past several years. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate Josephine’s life at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Monday evening, June 1, 2015 at 7:00 PM. Private family interment will be held at St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s Cemetery, York, PA. The family will receive friends at The Groffs on Monday from 6:00 PM until the time of service.
