John Eugene Andes

John Eugene Andes (known to all as Cook) passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Willow Valley Communities after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lancaster, he was the third son of William and Dorothy Andes. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers (William, Peter, and Nick). He is survived by his current wife (Patricia Shenk), two sons (Teran and Ian), their wives (Tina and Noelia respectively), two granddaughters (Edith and Phoebe), another granddaughter on the way, and four granddogs (Tango, Geoge, Hans, and Noah). Cook graduated from Manheim Township in 1958 and Brown University in 1962 with a degree in Philosophy. Following college, he went to New York where he began a successful career in advertising and marketing communications. Over the years, he worked with numerous agencies in various cities before settling in Florida where he started his own agency with his former wife, Gretchen. Though Cook wasn’t an avid reader, he had a deep passion for writing and authored 17 books, which were treasured by his many friends including those at Willow Valley. Among his many interests, Cook was dedicated to coaching Little League football, a commitment he began in New York City and continued in Florida until retiring in 2019. He also contributed his time to SCORE where he mentored small business owners. After a long absence, Cook returned to Lancaster in 2022 to marry the love of his life, Patty Shenk, whom he had known since high school. Cook’s warmth, dedication, and creativity left a lasting impression on anyone who knew him. He brought irreverence and joy to life along with a fighter’s spirit to the end. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities may be made in Cook’s memory.
