Jere John Schuler

Jere John Schuler, 58, of Ronks, PA, husband, father, son, brother, was surrounded by his family when he entered into rest on, Saturday, September 30, 2017, after a lengthy battle with Cancer at the Hospice and Community Center of Mount Joy. He was a man with honor and dignity. Known as “Bip” to his family and friends, Jere was born in Lancaster, PA on October 16, 1958 to Jere Waddell Schuler and the late Margaret “Peg” Sarah Newman Schuler. Bip was married to Sharon Wiker Schuler on the beautiful island of Maui 14 years ago. They have enjoyed sharing a home in Lancaster, PA and Atlanta, GA during their happy years. Jere was a 1976 graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School where his interest in investigative work was first noted as a reporter for the high school paper “The Limelight” investigating and writing stories from the community. He also featured an article titled Limelight meets “The Man” about his experience during a two-hour ride-along with the Chief of West Lampeter Township. His interest for law enforcement would have to take a back seat to his love for sports. After pitching a no-hitter in his first start for the Bunting Oilers in June 1972 his athletic career would become a priority. After making all-star on all three teams; baseball, football and basketball during his high school years, he received many athletic awards to include “Outstanding Senior Athlete” and was named the 1976 Lancaster Intelligencer “Athlete of the Year”. He was also inducted into the Lampeter-Strasburg Baseball Hall of Fame. Following his senior year in high school, Jere had to choose between an offer from the Cardinals to play baseball and a scholarship from Penn State to continue his studies while playing baseball. At the young age of 17, Jere chose The St. Louis Cardinals and was drafted in the third round of the Professional Baseball Draft. He played for a number of years until an injury brought him home to start his second career of law enforcement. Jere attended Millersville University and subsequently graduated from the Harrisburg Area Community College Police Academy. He served as a member of the West Lampeter Police Department, retiring after 30 years of which 27 years were devoted to being sole Detective of the department. He was also part of the Major Crimes Unit, where his quick and decisive interviewing style was greatly appreciated. Jere enjoyed working alongside law enforcement officers throughout the region on the Major Crimes Unit. Jere will be recalled as a creative storyteller but will be long remembered for how he stood for what was right and what was decent; by his moral standing and his need to cause benefit for all and to exalt his community through his living as a peace maker and a crime stopper. In addition to his wife, Sharon, Jere is survived by his father, Jere W. Schuler (Renée) of Lancaster, PA; his daughter, Shanna Schuler, and her son, Kennan, of St. Petersburg, FL; his sister, Stephanie S. Lininger (William) and their daughter, Taylor of Lancaster, PA; and his step children, Chloe Peru Blalock Wiker and Jack Oliver Blalock of Atlanta, GA. Love You Always and Forever.
