Henry "Harry" J. Glah, III

Henry “Harry” Joseph Glah, III, 78, died peacefully in his home on Sunday, January 21, 2024 following a hard-fought battle with cancer. He spent his youth in Lancaster, attended Malvern Preparatory School outside Philadelphia, and graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. After extensive world-traveling adventures, he founded a bicycle shop and motorcycle parts store before shifting gears in the late ’70s and, after studying in New York City, became a stockbroker where he quickly rose to the top of that profession. With his first wife Inta by his side for 42 years, Harry continued to crush the market while using his success to obtain bigger and bigger boats to catch bigger and bigger fish. Harry retired from being a broker at Royal Bank of Canada several years ago but never stopped sharing his immense knowledge with basically anyone who would listen. After Inta died of cancer in 2011, Harry married Melanie and they found much happiness continuing to explore the ocean trenches off Costa Rica and always coming home to cultivate his own personal jungle next to the Conestoga River. Harry was many things to many people; a fiercely loving and devoted husband; a larger than life father who expected greatness but saw the perfection in all the stumbling blocks along the way; an eccentric Granddad whose 4 grandsons will forever explore what it means to be his legacy all while remembering how he carefully curated the perfect ice cream cone, cheesesteak sub, iced tea and extra dark pretzels; a steadfast, protective big brother and patriarch to a family that sometimes, most of the time, feels larger than life; a deep sea Marlin hunter whose reputation preceded him around the world (and not just because of his angling prowess); a long-haired, Harley riding stock broker who would just as soon tell you about the benefits of Vanguard investments as give you grief about how dirty your pipes are on your bike; a semi-accurate bird shooter who’d jump up at 5am to lay in the blinds with his buddies in 20 degree weather but you’d have to shake him awake with a cup of coffee on any non-hunting day; a walking plant encyclopedia who was known for his big bulbs and even bigger leaves; an avid traveler who hated museums and sought out and stumbled into experiences few on the planet could fathom might possibly be real; a long-legged, close talker who called everyone “Baby”…everyone. Through all that, the common thread was passion. He was passionate. There was no partway. No “a little bit”. He was always all in. And if you chose, or were chosen, to take that ride with him, you best hold on. Because it was going to be fast, exhilarating, and rough sometimes. Sometimes, you even fell off. I think we all have at one time or another. Life was his wide-open road. And the world is a better place for having had Harry Glah living in it. Harry is survived by his wife, Mary Melanie Burnette of Lancaster, his son, Henry J. Glah IV, 52, of San Diego, California, his daughter, Maya E. Glah Trout, 47, of Eugene, Oregon and Melanie’s children, Abigail Burnette-Peake & Savannah Lefever. He was wildly proud of his four grandsons, Henry & Oliver Glah and Nikolas & Casher Trout. He is also survived by 5 sisters and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Inta Kirsteins Glah, his first wife of 42 years, his parents Dr. Henry J. Glah Jr & Alice Kathleen Glah, his sister, Kathy MacDonald, as well as his niece, Kathleen Benz and nephew, Marco Mastropietro. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Harry’s Memorial Service at The Groffs Family Funeral Home, 528 W. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Private family interment.
