Harold H. Quickel

Harold H. Quickel, 98, of Millersville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 25, after a brief illness and stay at Landis Homes. He was the husband of Mary Olive Quickel, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage until her death in 2006. Born in York County, he was the son of the late Irwin B. and Dora M. Quickel. Harold was a devoted and beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather. He was an inspirational role model for a long life well lived as a man of strong faith and integrity. He embraced life and learning with a positive spirit. Harold enjoyed engaging with others, displaying genuine interest and a catch-you-off-guard sense of humor. He had a remarkable memory and would entertain others with his detailed stories of the past. Harold graduated from North York High School in 1934 and summa cum laude from Gettysburg College in 1938. He worked for Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster for 43 years, first as a chemist and then as a purchasing agent. He began playing the violin at age seven and in high school became a charter member of the York Symphony Orchestra and later a charter member of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for 42 years. Harold also enjoyed photography, golf, and traveling with his wife both in the States and abroad. Harold’s commitment to his Christian faith and his service to the church led to his being known as a pillar of Covenant United Methodist Church (formerly Covenant Evangelical United Brethren) in Lancaster. He taught Sunday School from 1943 until present day, enjoyed his role as Sunday School Superintendent for over twenty years, and took on leadership roles on numerous boards and committees. He served as a lay delegate to the Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conferences for 41 consecutive years and as an elected lay delegate to four Evangelical United Brethren General Conferences and five United Methodist General Conferences. Harold is survived by two daughters, Lois Neidermyer of Lancaster and Eileen Monson of Boynton Beach, Florida, and one grandson, Thomas M. Monson. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Harold’s Life Celebration Service at Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, on Monday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m. Friends may call at The Groffs Family Funeral Services, 528 West Orange Street, Lancaster, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, and at the church on Monday, March 2, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. A luncheon will follow the service at the church and then internment in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in North York.
