Edward G. Ludwig

With heavy hearts we announce that Edward G. Ludwig, 74, of Lancaster, PA, passed peacefully to his heavenly home surrounded by family and friends on Monday, December 16, 2024. He was the son of the late Melvin and Ethel (Renninger) Ludwig and the brother of Jim Ludwig, also predeceased. Ed was the husband of Shirley A. (Myer) Ludwig, to whom he was married for 54 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. In addition to Shirley, he is survived by Matthew married to Carrie (Kacala) and their teens, Molly and Caroline of Winchester, VA and Mindi Burke and her teens, Ethan and Alexa who live in Mount Joy, PA. Ellen Ludwig of Lititz, PA is a surviving sister. While attending Garden Spot High School Ed earned scholastic honors, participated in music and theater programs and was a multisport athlete, graduating in 1968. As a teen he joined his dad in working at Sperry New Holland, now Case New Holland (CNH). After earning his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Millersville University in 1972, he returned to CNH and continued his employment there until his retirement from the Human Resource Department in 2013. Retirement opened time for Ed to golf, travel to the Holy Lands, tour Civil War battlefields, and sing. He loved being an active part of the lives of his kids and grandkids. Most family events included sports like hiking, croquet, boating, fishing, and more. Ed’s love of music ranged from classical music, to anything with humorous lyrics, and most notably, a devotion to and appreciation of barbershop harmony singing. He was a member of Lancaster’s Red Rose Chorus and several barber shop quartets. For 36 years, he sang and delighted audiences with the crazy humor of Razzmatazz, an acclaimed barber shop quartet and dear friends. Those who knew him best recognized Ed’s gift for remembering facts, figures, dates, stories, and times. He was formidable at Jeopardy, one of his favorite television shows. His tender heart and loyalty to his family were evident in every action and decision he made and will be long remembered and cherished. Ed attended and served at Calvary Church, Lancaster. He lived with and leaves a legacy of Christian faith and values. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Church’s Benevolence Fund, Global Ministries, or to your chosen ministry. A public Celebration of Life service will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd., on Monday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Ed’s private interment preceded at Bareville Union Cemetery on Brethren Church Road in Leola. The family expresses their deepest gratitude for the loving, compassionate medical care provided for Ed throughout his illness, especially in the last weeks by Hospice and Community Care and Landis Homes Healthcare staff.
