Dr. M. Kent

Dr. George Marshall Kent died on Monday, June 16, 2014 at age 86. An orthopedic surgeon, he served the Lancaster Community for over forty years. Born in Summit, NJ, son of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Girard Kent, he was a graduate of Blair Academy. He celebrated his 16th birthday at Williams College. Three years later he graduated and entered Temple University Medical School from which he received his M.D. degree in 1951. Internship and a one year surgical residency were taken in Montclair, NJ. Upon completion of his orthopedic surgical training in Massachusetts, in what is now the Tufts Affiliated Program, he became a Captain, U.S. Army Medical Corps. Assigned Chief of Orthopedic Section, U.S. Army Hospital, Ft. Jackson, SC, after which he established his private practice in Lancaster in 1959. He served on the active staff of Lancaster General Hospital and courtesy staff of St. Joseph and Community Hospital, now Lancaster Regional Hospital. Dr. Kent was a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons. A member of the Lancaster General Trauma Group, he was certified by the American College of Surgeons in Advanced Trauma Support. For more than 20 years, Dr. Kent served the Lancaster Society for Crippled Children and Adults, receiving a citation from the PA Department of Health in appreciation of his service. He also was Chief of the first Amputee Clinic in Lancaster under the Easter Seal Society in cooperation with the PA Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. A long time member of the Cleosophic Society, he served as its president in past years. He was a former patron of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and former member of Rock Ford and the Lancaster Historical Society now Lancaster History.org. Dr. Kent was a member of the Lancaster Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution, where he served as Regent, then Chaplain for many years. He was also a member of the Society of Colonial Wars. He was a member of the Lancaster Pirates and was on the Board of the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation at the time of his death. He was a member of the Hamilton Club. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he served on the P.E.P. Committee (people enjoying people) in the past. Dr. Kent enjoyed golf and tennis, having been on the tennis team at Williams. He loved music and history, thus his keen interest in the preservation of early medical artifacts and their history. Dr. Kent is survived by his wife, Hope Dankel Kent, a son, G. Marshall Kent, Jr. and his wife, Mary of Atlanta, GA and a daughter, Abigail Kent Flythe and her husband, Jamie of Spotsylvania, VA and three grandchildren: Margaret and Katherine Day Kent and Anne Day Flythe, all of whom he dearly loved. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas D. Kent of Lafayette Hill, PA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange Street, Lancaster with the Reverend Geoffrey S. Kohler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
