Dorothy Ellen Green

Dorothy Ellen Waybright Sitler Green, 93, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025, in her home at Cornwall Manor, Cornwall, PA, with her loving husband, Milton, by her side. They were 16 days shy of celebrating their 63rd wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Dot” to extended family members and “Dottie” to many of her friends. Dorothy was born at home on the family’s Mason Dixon Farm in Gettysburg, PA, to Clarence and Dorothy Ellen Hess Waybright. She was the youngest of five children after Horace, Lois, Geraldine, and Richard, and outlived them all. Baptized at Mount Joy Lutheran Church, south of Gettysburg, the family joined St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg when she was in 3rd grade. Dorothy attended Moritz Elementary’s one-room schoolhouse, 1st through 6th grade, then graduated to 7th grade in Gettysburg. She graduated from Gettysburg High School. She often relished in victory when playing Big Boggle with Milton, crediting her skill in finding many more words than he, due to her having listened to all the older students in her one-room school. She did love to win! She fell in love with Ralph W. Sitler, Jr, and married him in 1950, and then moved to Camp Hill, PA. Following a house fire, they moved to Franklintown, PA. Ralph died in 1960, and Dorothy was left to carry on with 5 sons. Dorothy then moved her family to Gettysburg on Hanover Street. She hired Mark Green to watch her boys, who later asked his older brother, Milton, to take over the job. He got along very well with them, with God guiding them, and, all the while, he and Dorothy fell in love! He joined the Army, and they married on December 24, 1962, at St. James Lutheran Church. They then moved to Fort Bragg, NC, where they had a son. At the end of his enlistment, they moved to Millersville, PA, where Dorothy supported him in earning Industrial Arts degrees at Millersville State College and in teaching. They had a second son, resulting in a family of seven boys (Dorothy’s favorite number). Dorothy’s farm-girl work ethic allowed her to venture into vegetable and flower gardening, painting still lifes, sewing, crafting, creating spoon dolls, and making over 30 shuttle-hooked rugs (with her mother’s hand shuttle). She entered several of her rugs into juried shows of the Lancaster Heritage Foundation: her Mason Dixon Farm scene rug, which was based on her childhood memories, was chosen to hang on display in their show in Lancaster—What an honor! Her work was exquisite. Dorothy, though left-handed, was ambidextrous, which facilitated her creative expression. Dorothy was a homemaker and master cook/baker. She made thousands of fastnachts through the years using an Amish recipe given to her by a friend. Her homemade sticky buns were second to none and were a family favorite. The harvest of her vegetable garden produced many canned jars, helping to feed the family throughout the year. While teaching, Milton became a part-time tinsmith. Dorothy was his tin antiquer, developing a unique, high-quality “old” gray patina-looking finish. In 17½ years, they produced over 23,000 pieces of many shapes and sizes. Their products sold in all 48 contiguous states through The Tin Bin in Neffsville, PA. Dorothy is survived by six sons—Michael (Kathy) of Richboro, PA, Benjamin (Hua) of Las Vegas, NV, David (Carolyn) of Jersey City, NJ, Ralph III (Debbie) of Glen Allen, VA, Jon (Janet) of Lebanon, PA, and Shawn (Kim) of Virginia Beach, VA, and one daughter-in-law, (Dale, Saratoga Springs, NY); twelve grandchildren (Matthew, Kelly (Mark), Justin (Billie), Sarah, Kerry (Kate), Eric (Shannon), Lauren (Alex), Taylor, Emily (Jacob), Cameron and Collin (Peri); and thirteen great-grandchildren (Logan, Alexia, Kerry, Charlotte, Temperance, Kadence, Fiona, Cordelia, Essie, Elliot, Austin, Jayden and Jack). Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, first husband, Ralph Sitler, Jr., and her son, Daniel Clarence Sitler. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dorothy’s Funeral Service at St. James Lutheran Church, 107 York Street, Gettysburg, PA, on Friday, December 19, 2025, at noon. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, PA.
