Dale E. Ziegler

Dale E. Ziegler, 92, of Lancaster, died on Monday, December 5, 2016 at the Glen, Willow Valley Communities. He was the husband of Faye (Hannigan) Ziegler, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born in Red Lion, he was the son of the late Ivan and Mabel (Stein) Ziegler. He graduated from Red Lion High School in 1942. After serving three years in the U.S. Army, he studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts). Dale began his career in greeting card design and in small ad agencies. He worked as graphic designer for Rudisill Printing Co. and its successor, R.R. Donnelley in Lancaster, followed by eighteen years as Corporate Creative Director for U.S. Tobacco Co. in Greenwich, Ct. Although he worked in many media, watercolor was his favorite. Living and painting in Lancaster County, he was known for his interpretations of the lush farmlands and local community. He described himself as a regional artist, painting what he loved and knew best. His work was in the traditional watercolor style, a direct approach with luminous, transparent colors. His work has been exhibited in juried shows in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and other states. He was a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and an honorary life member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. In 2014, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society established a perpetual juried exhibition award in his honor entitled “The Dale Ziegler Watercolor Honorarium”. This award will be presented each year to a watercolor artist whose work Embodies the same expertise and spirit that have marked Dale’s work for many years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Fred, husband of Marie Thayer, Shelburne, VT., grandson Sam, Bozeman, MT. and granddaughter, Molly, New York City. He was predeceased by a son, Philip and brothers, Albert and Larry. The family would like to thank the staff of the fourth floor of the Glen for their loving and compassionate care while he lived there. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 17, 2016 in the Johnson Auditorium of Willow Valley Manor North, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster PA.
