Betty Jean Riley

Betty went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. Betty was able to spend her last days surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born September 1, 1932 in Burlington, NC to the late Kyle and Nellie Alderson, Betty is survived by one son, Clarence, Jr., two daughters, Arla Brown and Pennie, spouse of Laura Savage and one son-in-law, James Covert, Sr., all of Lancaster. Surviving in addition to her children are three sisters: Louise Campbell of Manassas, VA, Alice Sandridge of Unionville, VA, Barbara Bland of Myrtle Beach, SC and one brother, Jimmy of Charlotte Hall, MD. Besides her children and siblings, Betty was blessed with seven grandchildren Dwight, Trisha, Christopher, Ricky, Jr. (Hope), Kristian, Robert (Karli), and Annie. She was further blessed with 10 great-grandchildren; all who held a special place in her heart and always brought a smile to her face. Betty also has multiple nieces and nephews that will fondly remember her as Aunt Betty. Preceding Betty on this journey; she joins her parents, husband, Clarence (Peenie), two sons, Ricky L. and Lenny L., and four brothers:, Kyle, Jr., Clarence, Clyde and Kenneth. Betty was a homemaker who spent her time raising her children. She later went to work at and retire from Conestoga View Nursing Home. Ironically, Betty spent her last years as a resident of the “View.” The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation for the care given to Betty. Betty had a happy soul who enjoyed life through laughter. Her first passion was spending time with her family and friends. Known also as “Betty Boop”, she always loved to be on the go regardless of the destination. Besides being with her family, she was an avid bingo player and on occasion, visited the casino. Betty and her family became members of the Salvation Army over 50 years ago. Throughout the years, the Salvation Army has been an important source of support to Betty and her family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Betty’s Celebration of Life Funeral Service at The Salvation Army, 131 S. Queen Street, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with Captain Timothy Sheehan officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Fred F. Groff Funeral Home, 234 W. Orange Street, Lancaster from 7:00–9:00 p.m. and on Saturday at The Salvation Army from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Quarryville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to The Salvation Army, 131 S. Queen Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.
