Alvia Gaskin de Urdaneta

Alvia Gaskin de Urdaneta went home to be with her Savior on Saturday, December 13, 2025. She peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by her loving husband, children, and grandchildren. Born in a small town in Venezuela, called Punta de Leiva, she was the daughter of Alan Carlton Gaskin and Dolores Alvarez de Gaskin. Alvia was the loving wife of José Urdaneta-Galué, celebrating 63 years of marriage on September 2. Together they emigrated in 2016 from her adored country of Venezuela to become permanent residents of Mountville in Lancaster County, PA. Alvia attended high school at the Liceo Baralt and then medical school at the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela. There she met her husband, José, and together they graduated with an MD degree in 1960. Alvia was one of seven female medical school graduates that year. She then completed two postgraduate programs at the University of Pennsylvania (Anatomical Pathology) and New York Medical College (Clinical Pathology), and became the first female doctor in Venezuela to achieve this dual training. This was followed by research fellowships in renal and ovarian pathology at the University of Chicago and at Johns Hopkins University. Alvia devoted her professional life to research and teaching in the medical school of the Universidad del Zulia, where she established the residency program in Pathology, was chair of the Department of Pathology for 12 years, and was the founding director of the School of Bioanalysis. As a leader in her field, Alvia established and organized for eleven years the only national research conference in anatomical pathology in Venezuela, and was given the honor to chair the committee to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the University of Zulia in 1981. Alvia was the first female physician to be admitted as a member of the Academy of Medicine of the State of Zulia, and the first female member of the Rotary Club of Maracaibo, of which she later became its first female President. Alvia, a trailblazing woman of science and academics, highly esteemed nationally and internationally by her peers and her students, retired from her outstanding career in 2013. Alvia was an amazing wife, mother, daughter and sister. Her love of God was the only thing greater than her love for her family. Alvia’s favorite book to read was the Holy Bible and lived her life by its words. Her affinity for writing was manifested in the multiple volumes of journals she kept since her childhood, and the books and research papers she published. Alvia always was prepared to help others selflessly. Not a lover of cooking, but every Christmas she made enough hallacas, a traditional Venezuelan Christmastime meal, to feed her own family, and the families of her 10 brothers and sisters. Alvia is survived by her husband, José, her children Alvia Elena, José Enrique and Sandra; her son in law, Karl; her daughter in love, Veronica; and her grandchildren, Aldo Andrés, Alvia Veronica, Veronica Michelle, Vanessa, Sofía, and Lily; and her wonderful caregivers, Sarah and Dollys. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Alvia’s memorial service at First United Methodist Church, 29 East Walnut Street, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until the time of service. Following the service, there will be light refreshments and an opportunity for people to share their memories of Alvia. Interment will be at a later date. Nació en una pequeña ciudad Venezolana, llamada Punta de Leiva. Era la amante esposa de José Urdaneta-Galué con quien celebró el 2 de Spetiembre 63 años de matrimonio. En el 2016, juntos emigraron de su adorado país, Venezuela, para convertirse en residentes permanentes de Mountville, en el Condado de Lancaster, Pennsylvania. En Maracaibo, Venezuela, Alvia estudió Bachillerato en el Liceo Baralt y luego estudió medicina en la Universidad del Zulia (LUZ). Allí conoció a su esposo, José, y juntos se graduaron de médico en 1960. Alvia fue una de las siete mujeres que se graduaron ese año. Luego completó dos estudios de postgrado en la Universidad de Pennsylvania (Anatomía Patológica) y en New York Medical College (Patología Clínica), así convirtiéndose en la primera mujer Venezolana en tener ambas especialidades. Luego fue becaria de investigación en las Universidades de Chicago y Johns Hopkins, donde estudió patología renal y ovárica. Alvia dedicó su vida profesional a la investigación y docencia en la Facultad de Medicina de LUZ, donde estableció el programa de postgrado en patología, fue jefe de la cátedra de anatomía patológica por 12 años, y fue la primera directora de la Escuela de Bioanalisis. Como líder que fue en su especialidad, estableció y organizó por 11 años las única jornadas científicas de anatomía patológica en Venezuela, y tuvo el honor de ser elegida para dirigir la organización del centenario de LUZ en 1981. Alvia fue la primera mujer admitida como Miembro Titular de la Academia de Medicina del Estado Zulia. También fue la primera mujer miembro del Rotary Club de Maracaibo, y luego fue la primera mujer presidente de ese club. Alvia, pionera de la ciencia y el ejercicio académico, sumamente estimada a nivel nacional e internacional por sus colegas y estudiantes, se jubiló de su ilustre carrera en el 2013. Alvia fue una formidable esposa, madre, hija, y hermana. Su amor a Dios era lo único más grande que su amor a su familia. Su libro favorito era la Biblia, y vivió su vida acorde con sus enseñanzas. Su afinidad por escribir la manifestó en los múltiples volúmenes de diarios que mantuvo desde la niñez, y en los libros y trabajos de investigación que publicó. Alvia siempre estuvo lista y dispuesta a ayudar a los demás. No era amante de la cocina, pero siempre en Navidad hacía suficientes hallacas, una comida navideña tradicional Venezolana, para alimentar las familias de sus 10 hermanos y hermanas. A Alvia la sobreviven su esposo, José, sus hijos, Alvia Elena, José Enrique, y Sandra; su nuero, Karl; Verónica, a quien siempre quiso como una hija; sus nietos, Aldo Andrés, Alvia Verónica, Verónica Michelle, Vanessa, Sofía, y Lily; y sus excelentes cuidadoras, Sarah y Dollys.
